How long have you been playing?
Since 2005
Have you ever been in low sec?
I moved to low sec two or three weeks after starting the game.
Do you run missions or complexes in low sec?
I used to but have stopped since Apocrypha. Scanning is too easy now and you have to keep clicking the damn scanner to counter it. I wasn't afraid of losing the ship I flew, I was p***** off by the annoyance the directional scanner is.
If so, what is the appeal for you?
Better reward, less competition, empty systems thus no lag.
If not, why not?
I moved back to high sec and occasionally run missions there because it's much less of a chore if you don't have to watch the scanner all the time.
Are rewards in low sec in line with the risk?
Complexes I'd say yes, missions now. Mining - forget about mining in low sec regardless of what ores are there.
Is the risk in low sec over-stated?
Yes, very much so. I only lost one ship that I wasn't prepared to lose, and even this was to a trap I only fell to because I was not attentive enough (as in "Oops. I bet there is a camp on the other side of the gate I just clicked 'jump' before thinking". There was :) ).
Would education from savvy players about how to mitigate risk in low sec encourage folks who didn't just want to AFK L4's to operate there?
I doubt it. The best low sec mission boat is a T2 Domi or Raven, and there is no reason to ever go beyond that. So why bother missioning if there is nothing to look forward to?
What is the number one change to low sec that would cause you to considering doing missions and complexes there?
A better intel tool or defence. Local isn't that useful (and TOO useful at the same time) if the attacker is not an outlaw. And besides, it's another thing you have to watch religiously contrary to high sec. Right now there is nothing you can do to prevent being probed out unless you go unprobable T3, and what's the point in that? Why nerf your setup and thus nerf your income?
Do you believe it is possible to make low sec changes that would allow both pirates and carebears to co-exist profitably without crippling either's play style to extinction? Why or why not?
That's hard. Outlaws are restricted to low sec and thus the waters are overfished. The few non-outlaws that venture into low sec get quickly overwhelmed once found and there is little point into going into low sec. Boosting low sec would mean making it so incredibly rewarding that it would instantly unbalance the game. I think FW showed us a way how it could be done: add something to low sec that cannot be gotten elsewhere (Tier 1 faction BS) that players will want. At 500M a unit losing an occasional ship isn't much of a big issue, and it's not an ISK fountain either. Following that example I'd add some pirate faction agents to low sec (and maybe reduce drop rates in 0.0 to prevent an oversupply). This would also help players who want to portray pirate faction characters without forcing them into NPC 0.0 - a step not taken lightly by a young character.
